Limbs, brush, leaves and other grindable vegetative matter may be left at the parking lot on the Flats. Place debris between the yellow sawhorses... keeping it completely out of the travel lanes.

Absolutely no trash, no metal, no glass and no plastic allowed. Keep it all "green", team.

The following proposals by the St. Leonard Vision Group (SLVG) do not necessarily reflect the views or objectives of the Long Beach Civic Association (LBCA), but are presented here for public evaluation.

St. Leonard Vision Group (SLVG) urges everyone to COME OUT and SHOW SUPPORT for the following This Tuesday, 1/22, 6:30pm at St. Leo Elementary

VISION: We, the people of St. Leonard, share a commitment to the vision for St. Leonard Town Center. The vision for St. Leonard Town Center is to be a safe, vibrant, traditional town center noted for its rich heritage, enduring scale, livability and charm that serves the needs of its quaint community.

OBJECTIVE/PROBLEM STATEMENT: The needs of the community are not being met in Town. More in-town shops (i.e, goods and services), recreational/exercise opportunities, and a “Town Square” are needed. No one-story strip shopping centers. Connect the proposed “Town Square” and St. Leonard Recreation Park.

STRATEGIES: Continue to refine the St. Leonard Master Plan & Zoning Ordinance. Lobby support for funding of capital improvements and policy actions that are in the Master Plan to make St. Leonard Town Center a Commissioners priority for improvements. Press for support of actions and funding that will improve the market for in-town shops, expand St. Leonard Recreation Park, and create a “Town Square.”

ACTIONS NEEDED:
- Fund sewer feasibility study & expanded water system in FY2009. Overdue by 5 years!
- County approvals/support for more Town visibility from Rt. 2/4. Traffic on Rt. 2/4 provides market for in-town shops
- Incentives or zoning changes to encourage more daytime employment. Workers provide market for in-town shops.
- Allow more housing density/smaller residential lot sizes to provide housing stock and market for in-town shops. This will also enhance the Town’s charm, livability and scale.
- More help from the Dept of Economic Development (DED) to help improve market conditions and to attract businesses to the Town Center; more dialog concerning solutions to business & economic development problems
- Updated special studies: Market analysis, land inventory & build-out potential
- Construct the proposed “Town Square” with a raised stage, water/lighting features, park benches, landscaping, and a Town Clock. Overdue by 5 years!
- Expand St. Leonard Recreation Park: New basketball & tennis courts, playground, and skateboard park
- Extend Leonard Avenue to connect with St. Leonard Recreation Park and Remove guard rail barricade at the end of Leonard Avenue
- Install signs to help visitors find existing parking in front of Dowell House meeting hall and St. Leonard Recreation Park
- Construct sidewalks between Beach communities and Town to get back to when we could easily walk between these places/communities without concern for pedestrian safety.

SHA Makes An Old Light Right...

Thanks to SHA District Engineer Greg Welker and his associates, St. Leonard's traffic signal will soon see a "separate phase for each side street approach". Eastbound Calvert Beach Rd and westbound Ball Rd will have their own signal cycles... with no more games of "chicken" as oncoming drivers turn left without warning!

You Didn't Hear It From Me, But...

UPDATE: Word now is that the new St Leonard Post Office, (located at MD 765 and Woods Road; former site of Tommie's Toad Stool), will open for business on or about Tuesday ~~January 22nd~~, February 19... after the ~~Martin Luther King~~ President’s Day holiday.

If all goes according to plan, the contents of the old post office building will be moved and installed in its' spanking new quarters over the long holiday weekend. See you there!!!

A Missing Cat...

~~Mieke Rockhill~~~~'s beloved black cat, Elmo, has gone missing. He is easily recognized by bare patches where his fur was recently shaved for medical tests.~~

UPDATE: Elmo died peacefully in Mieke’s arms, and is (reportedly) now happily chasing butterflies in Heaven.

Mieke Rockhill reports the Beaches Water Co-op meeting (Thursday 7/12 at their Hillside Rd. office) will discuss the fact that BWC ran short on water Sunday due to: extra holiday weekend use; on-going drought conditions; heavy lawn watering and car washing. (A Cherry Lane Farm residence had 5 hoses running at once. Using just 3 hoses at once draws down the entire water supply from one pump. There are only 5 pumps serving the whole community.) Attend the meeting if you have any questions and/or suggestions. "We're all in this together!"

Environmental Gardening Workshop March 31st!

Mark your calendars for the last Saturday of March! Veronica Cristo, Master Gardener & Watershed Planner for Calvert County, will be giving a workshop using eco-friendly materials, what to plant near the water, rain barrels, rain gardens & so much more! I have heard Veronica give several talks and she is terrific. I recommend her very highly. She is both informative and passionate about environmentally friendly gardening. Even a container gardener like me will benefit! The workshop will start at 9 AM at the Long Beach Community Center on Calvert Blvd. (Contact me for directions if you need them!)

Somewhere Up There, Bertie Is Smiling ...

Calvert County landmark, Buehler's Market, has re-opened under the new and able management of Maria Buehler, (grand- daughter of founder Bertie Wood Buehler) with papa Pat playing a role in the background. Reliable reports indicate the store is well stocked and ready-for-business. Word on the street is that a new pass-through will soon connect the Market to the Liquor store next door. That's one stop shopping, St. Leo style. (Be sure to ask for the slot machines!)

On Tuesday Morning January 30th, the St. Leo. Volunteer Fire & Rescue Co 7 was dispatched to 5755 Oakcrest Drive in Long Beach for a house fire.

A great new gate awaits...

Thanks to the pure acetylene-fueled talents of Fred Leonard, an almost phosphorescent yellow replacement gate has now appeared along North Harbor Drive. The new barrier has replaced the one which was nearly destroyed during the wee hours of the morning of August 30th.

Not yet functional, the gate awaits reinstallation of a locking post and warning signs before assuming its summertime role as overnight guardian of the North Harbor Beach lot. LBCA President Dave Portyrata deserves "props" for expediting this major repair. (Nice work, Dave!)

UPDATE!! The warning signs and locking post for the gate have now been fully restored!

Several of our neighbors have been complaining recently about the vicious mosquitoes, despite vigorous spraying by Calvert County (which is funded by your annual LBCA membership dues).

Please help spread the word that standing water (even as little as a spoonful) is a mosquito's breeding ground. Check around your place to see if you may have some in flower pot saucers, buckets, plastic containers, etc.

Flag Harbor shown on TV program...

The Kerry Scheele episode of "Missing Persons Unit" for which they filmed scenes at Flag Harbor back in July will be airing this Wednesday (Sept. 20) at 9:30pm on Court TV. It is also replaying on Thursday (Sept. 21) at 10:00pm just in case you can’t catch it on Wednesday or would like to watch it again. As always, make sure to check your local listings just to be safe.
